The Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police continue the investigation of a structure fire Sunday on Bois Blanc Island in Mackinac County.
Deputies and fire units were called to the scene around 11:10 AM Sunday for a report of smoke coming from the island seen from Cheboygan.
Another report came from an individual who was walking down the road near the fire and was severely burned.
Bois Blanc Township Fire and Rescue and a Deputy from the Sheriff’s office responded.
Two people were injured in the fire: Kevin McCormack, 59, and Caroline Klautky-McCormack, 51.
Both were flown to a burn unit downstate. Kevin McCormack later died at a downstate hospital. Caroline Klautky-McCormack is still hospitalized and is expected to recover.
Deputies called the Michigan State Police Fire Marshalls division to assist in the investigation.
State Police, Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office and Bois Blanc Township Fire Department were on the scene Monday to conduct their scene investigation.
Preliminary indications are that there was an accidental propane explosion in the home causing extensive fire and damage.
