The US Forest Service provides a variety of trails across Hiawatha National Forest.
Users of the Bay de Noc/Grand Island Trail have recently contacted agency staff to discuss projects and safety concerns on the trail. To further discuss management of the Bay de Noc/Grand Island Trail, and the broader challenges associated with managing multiple use non-motorized trails, the US Forest Service invites the public to participate in a public discussion on Tuesday, April 16th at 6:00 p.m. at the Mathias Township Community Building in Trenary, MI.
“We appreciate hearing from trail users, and we are committed to providing safe and enjoyable recreation opportunities for all users across the forest,” said Paul Holeva, Forest Recreation Program Manager.
The Bay de Noc/Grand Island trail is currently managed for multiple non-motorized uses, such as equestrian, mountain biking, and hiking. At this time, the Hiawatha National Forest has not received any proposals to change the management of this trail; however, we are actively exploring partnership opportunities to help us maintain the trail and to assist us with several projects along the route.
The 2006 Forest Plan identifies the following goals for the Forest Trails System:
- A safe and cost-effective road and trail system provides a variety of recreation experiences, responds to changing social needs and minimizes user conflicts. The system includes loops and connections to access recreation facilities and local community services.
- Trail and route development provide for multiple use, mitigate social conflicts and prevent natural resource damage.
