At approximately 5:45 Tuesday morning, the Michigan State Police Sault Ste. Marie Post responded to the intersection of M-129 and M-80 in Pickford Township, Chippewa County, for a two-vehicle traffic crash.
Troopers from the post arrived on scene and found a passenger of one vehicle, 57-year-old Suzette Lynn Steel of Detour Village, was unresponsive and not breathing. Lifesaving measures were started by responding personnel.
Fire department personnel utilized the jaws of life to extricate Steel from the vehicle. Steel was then transported to the War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie by EMS where she was pronounced dead by the attending physician at 6:30 a.m.
The vehicle occupied by Steel was driven by her husband, 57-year-old Michael Dee Steel, also of Detour Village.
Their vehicle was northbound on M-129 when they attempted to turn into the gas station on the corner of M80 and were struck by a southbound vehicle driven by 24-year-old Cody James Hoornstra of Brimley. The drivers of both vehicles were transported to the War Memorial Hospital where they were treated and released.
The crash is currently under investigation. Agencies assisting the MSP were Pickford Fire Department, Pickford EMS, Kinross EMS, and Sault Ste. Marie EMS, and accident investigators from the Sault Ste. Marie Post.
