A new principal conductor and a new family-friendly Halloween concert headline the Marquette Symphony Orchestra’s 2018-19 season.
The orchestra announced Friday that individual tickets and season tickets are now on sale for the upcoming season. All performances are held at Kaufman Auditorium in Marquette.
Masestro Octavio Más-Arocas conducted the orchestra in a highly successful April 2018 performance. He was then chosen to be the MSO’s new principal conductor. Más-Arocas returns to Marquette to begin the symphony’s 22nd season on Saturday, Sept. 15.
On Sept. 15, the orchestra will perform a program entitled “From Bach to the Future,” which will include contributions to the community-wide Bach Festival. The MSO will perform J.S. Bach’s Fantasia and Fugue in C minor, transcribed by Elgar, and 3 Chorales by Bach, transcribed by Respighi. The third work is a very unique piece by Tom Trapp entitled “Headless Snowman,” which is based on Bach’s 2-part Invention in F Major. The MSO will also perform Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8.
On Sunday, Oct. 28, the audience will be treated to “Halloween Spooktacular!” It’s an afternoon concert that will enthrall the entire family. The performance will include selections from Harry Potter, Little Shop of Horrors, Phantom of the Opera and Psycho, along with Night on Bald Mountain, Sorcerer’s Apprentice and other popular pieces. The afternoon will also feature a children’s choir of third through fifth graders.
The MSO’s “Sounds of the Holidays” concert has become a tradition for many, and will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8. Janis Shier Peterson and Steve Grugin will conduct the orchestra. The Marquette Senior High School Chorale will also take part.
On Saturday, Feb. 23, the orchestra’s “Under Mountains of Ocean” performance features youth concerto competition winner Evan Zegiel performing Nelson T. Gast’s Under Mountains of Ocean. It’s a world premiere tuba concerto.
Saturday, April 13 is also a first with “Jazz Meets Classical: A Musical Mélange.” In a collaboration with the NMU Jazz Festival, the MSO will be presenting nationally renowned trumpeter Allen Vizzutti, who will perform both a jazz piece and one from the classical repertoire with the MSO. Maestro Más-Arocas will also conduct Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5.
Individual concert tickets are on sale at NMU Ticket Outlets and online at tickets.nmu.edu. Tickets for adults are $17-32. Student tickets are $12 and children 13 and under are $9. Two free children (6-14) tickets are available with the purchase of one adult ticket at an NMU Ticket Outlet.
