On Friday, August 17, at approximately 1:45 p.m., Troopers from the Michigan State Police Calumet Post were dispatched to M-28 approximately two miles west of Sidnaw in Duncan Township, Houghton County for a three-vehicle personal injury crash.
The investigation determined that a 2000 Honda Accord driven by 72 -ear-old Roberta Vizina of Baraga was travelling westbound on M-28 when she rear-ended a 2015 Toyota Highlander driven by 59-year-old Karen Moller of Eveleth, Minnesota.
Moller was stopped in the westbound lane for a temporary lane closure due to road construction. As a result of the crash, Moller then rear-ended a 2001 Kenworth tractor trailer driven by 49 year-old Garrett Ayotte of Bad Axe, MI, who was also stopped in front of Moller’s vehicle for the lane closure.
M-28 was temporarily shut down while the crash was being investigated and the vehicles removed from the roadway.
Vizina was transported to Baraga County Memorial Hospital by Bay EMS, where she was later pronounced deceased. The other two drivers reported no injuries.
The investigation is ongoing.
