On 8-10-18, at approximately 4:30 p.m., troopers from the Calumet Post were dispatched to a two car crash on Denton Road near US-41.
A vehicle, driven by a 59-year-old woman from Chassell, was stopped on Denton Road waiting to turn left on US-41 when it was rear ended by another vehicle, driven by a 19-year-old man from L’Anse.
The crash resulted in minor damage with no injuries. The at-fault driver was determined to have no insurance and an improper registration plate on his vehicle.
During the course of the investigation, a Michigan State Police canine was utilized and gave a positive indication for narcotics on the at-fault driver’s vehicle. Subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of drug paraphernalia and a pipe bomb located in the vehicle.
Following the discovery of the pipe bomb, the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad was contacted and the scene was secured pending the arrival of bomb squad team members. The bomb squad was ultimately able to render the pipe bomb safe by making it non-functioning.
The 19-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of a dangerous weapon, no insurance and improper registration plate. The suspect is lodged in the Houghton County Jail pending arraignment.
