The 77 veterans who were going to fly on the 24th U.P. Honor Flight Wednesday will have to wait another day.
Fog rolled into the Escanaba area early Wednesday morning, delaying the 6:30 am flight. By the time the fog lifted, it was too late, as trip coordinator Scott Knauf told the group that the flight crews are not allowed to work for more than eight hours.
The airline was going to get another plane and crew, but that would not have arrived in Escanaba until 4:00 in the afternoon. Knauf said that going to Washington DC for a couple of hours wasn’t worth it.
So, the Honor Flight board voted to try again on Thursday.
The veterans were to be put up in an Escanaba hotel for a second night Wednesday night, and the plan is to take off Thursday morning, albeit an hour later. The flight is expected to be back in Escanaba at about 10 tonight after the veterans go to see the monuments erected in their honor.
