To Celebrate the third anniversary of the founding of the Gladstone Michigan Soo Line Steam Engine #730 Authority, they will be hosting the first-ever Railroad Day held in conjunction with the annual Soo Line Historical and Technical Society’s 2024 Convention at the Antique Village located at the U.P. State Fairgrounds in Escanaba, Friday September 13th from 10 AM to 4 PM.
An “Upper Peninsula Homecoming” is the theme for the Soo Line Historical and Technical Society Convention held at the Island resort September 12th thru the 15th. Throughout the summer, the U.P. Steam and Gas Engine Association has been transporting people back in time.
The Antique village, located at the U.P. State Fairgrounds in Escanaba, is a miniature town that was designed to replicate the feel of every day life for those living during the early 1900s. With live demonstrations, various shops, and historic displays, visitors get to a chance to experience living history while touring the space.
Enjoy a festival atmosphere with Model Rail Road Club exhibition,evoking the feel of a by-gone era, the Antique Village offers visitors an interactive learning experience with almost two acres of shops and displays. From a school house containing antique furniture pieces donated by a local school, to a telegraph office, Ham Radio Operators Building which holds a wide variety of communication devices, these functional displays provide a enjoyable method of hands-on learning for attendees. Outside these buildings are several unique pieces of local history, including the Murphy Diesel Engine and a saw mill that dates back to 1869.
You will get a chance to visit with our hosting partner, the Steam and Gas Engine Association and the National Soo Line Historical and Technical Society members from all over the country. See vintage machinery in operation and watch as local artisans demonstrate traditional handicrafts.
A wide variety of unique handcrafted items are available to purchase. The village currently houses over 30 attractions for visitors to enjoy. The Little Red Caboose mobile food truck will be on hand serving train specials. Donations will be accepted for the preservation of the Soo Line Steam Engine #730 in Gladstone.
