Peninsula Point in central Upper Michigan. It Is one of the sites where they pause to rest along their journey.
UPWild will gather at the tip of the Stonington Peninsula to offer blessings and prayers for a safe passage.
Bishop Rayford Ray of the Episcopal Diocese of Northern Michigan is planning to attend.
“The Butterfly is a powerful symbol of resurrection and of life.” said Ray. We will gather to honor the land and the water and nature itself.”
The last two weeks of August and the first few weeks of September are the traditional period for their annual migration to The Sierra Madre Mountains in Mexico, a journey of 2,500 to 3,000 miles. Monarchs travel only by day and average 50-100 miles per day.
Leaving the tip of the Stonington Peninsula they will fly over to Door County, Wisconsin. Monarchs roost in the cedar trees at night. These trees offer warmth and protection from wind and rain. If you plan to attend please dress for the weather and bring a chair for seating.
