There will be an event called “Gear Up Gala” this Wednesday in Manistique.
It’s a back-to-school event, whichstarted out as “I Heart Manistique” and has quickly evolved.
From 4:00 until 7:00 Wednesday evening, students can get backpacks, school supplies, clothing, free shoes, haircuts, and more.
“The idea is to get all of the students in the Manistique area to get ready for the school year,” Manistique Schools Superintendent Dr. Kristina Hansen told RRN News. “With finances being the way that they are, we know that we have a lot of community members in need. To get ready for school is an expensive thing. The community outpouring has been simply amazing. About 30 groups and organizations have donated to this. We are so incredibly gratefuil.”
First Baptist Church started the event a few years ago. This year, Jennifer Watson from Limestone Federal Credit Union, and Christi Ryan, from the Helpful Hotspot, joined forces with the church and have created this HIGE community event. Limestone is donating the majority of school supplies to all local K-5 students. Nicolet Bank is collecting supplies for 6th-12th grade students. The list of donors, sponsors, and volunteers keeps growing.
“It’s just amazing,” Hansen said. “The amount of anonymous donations that have been rolling in, it just brings a tear to my eye to know that people are so supportive of our youth, and making it a successful start of the school year for our kids.”
