The City of Negaunee, in partnership with the Lake Superior Community Partnership, proudly hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 15, 2024, to mark the successful re-opening of LaCombe Softball Field. This event celebrated the completion of extensive Universal Design/Access improvements, making the field a more inclusive space for all community members and visitors.
The renovations, made possible through the combined efforts of the Negaunee Little League, the City of Negaunee, and generous contributions from local residents, visitors, Negaunee alumni, and business owners, were designed to ensure that everyone, regardless of physical ability, can enjoy LaCombe Field.
Key upgrades include:
- The construction of universally accessible dugouts and sidewalks.
- The installation of ADA-compliant ramps.
- The addition of new accessible parking spaces.
These improvements provide easy access to the field, stands, concession areas, bathrooms, and dugouts, allowing all patrons to participate fully in the activities hosted at LaCombe Field.
“LaCombe Field has always been a cornerstone of our community, and these improvements ensure that it remains a place where everyone can come together,” said David Nelson, the City of Negaunee’s Planning and Zoning Administrator. “We’re thrilled to see this project come to fruition, and we’re grateful to everyone who helped make it possible.”
LaCombe Field is a cherished venue for numerous community events, including the Renee Thomas Memorial Tournament, the Iron Range Women’s League, the Old Timers game, the Co-Ed League, and the Alumni Softball Tournament. With these upgrades, the field is now more accessible than ever, ensuring that all attendees can enjoy the experiences that make LaCombe a special part of Negaunee.
The project was supported by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s (MEDC) Public Spaces Community Places grant program, which matched the $50,765 local donations dollar for dollar. This enabled the City of Negaunee to achieve its fundraising goals and complete the project successfully.
“We are incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together,” added David Nelson. “These upgrades will have a lasting impact on our community, ensuring that LaCombe Field remains a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone.”
