UP Health System – Marquette (UPHS – Marquette) is pleased to announce the addition of Sara Sutherland, MD, to its team of emergency medicine physicians. A native of Munising, Dr. Sutherland brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to the community to her new role.
As an emergency medicine physician, Dr. Sutherland is trained to handle a wide range of medical emergencies, from heart attacks and strokes to broken bones and severe allergic reactions. Her expertise also extends to treating illnesses such as pneumonia, asthma and severe infections. Additionally, she is skilled in managing traumatic injuries, including those resulting from accidents, falls and sports injuries.
Dr. Sutherland earned her Doctorate in Medicine from the Central Michigan University College of Human Medicine in Mount Pleasant, MI, and completed her emergency medicine residency at various Mayo Clinic locations throughout Minnesota.
During her residency training, she volunteered time abroad in native Ugandan and Ghanaian communities, teaching “Stop the Bleed” and Basic Life Support classes and providing OB/GYN and sexually transmitted infection care and education. She is also currently pursuing a fellowship in the Academy of Wilderness Medicine, learning how to best provide specialized medical care in remote, wilderness and expedition environments.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Sutherland back to the Upper Peninsula,” said UPHS – Marquette Chief Executive Officer Tonya Darner, MBA. “She worked here at our Information Desk and as a patient sitter while getting her undergraduate degree from Northern Michigan University, and it is incredible to see her come full circle here now as a physician. Her experience in emergency medicine, coupled with her deep-rooted connection to the community, make her an invaluable asset to our team.”
Dr. Sutherland shared her enthusiasm for returning home, stating, “It’s truly a privilege to be here and take care of my community. Emergency medicine is a dynamic and challenging field—being prepared to treat any patient who walks through our doors is what has always drawn me to this specialty.”
As the federally-designated Regional Referral Center for the UP, and a Level II Trauma Center, Primary Stroke Center, and Accredited Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI, UPHS – Marquette is ready and equipped to treat the most medically complex patients in our region. It also houses the region’s only neonatal intensive care unit, offering life-saving care for premature and critically ill newborns.
