The battle to replace retiring Democratic U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow moved forward Tuesday night with the primary elections across Michigan.
On the Democratic side, current Congressman Elissa Slotkin (D-Holly), easily defeated challenger Harper Hill to advance to the November general election. She had better than 78 percent of the vote, and the race was called less than two hours after the polls closed by all of the major downstate media organizations.
Hill, a Detroit author, had roughly 20 percent of the vote.
Stabenow, who is stepping down after 24 years in office, issued a statement late Tuesday night giving Slotkin her “strong endorsement”.
On the Republican side, former Congressman Mike Rogers (R-Brighton), defeated three other challengers to get the GOP nomination. He had some 66 percent of the vote, with Dr. Sherry O’Donnell second with 18 percent of the vote. Former Congressman Justin Amash (R-Grand Rapids), trailed with 15-percent of the vote.
Suburban Detroit businessman Sandy Pensler finished with about eight percent of the vote. He was still on the ballot even though he dropped out of the race.
Rogers, who served in Congress from 2001-2015, was endorsed by former President Donald Trump.
SEN. DEBBIE STABENOW STATEMENT:
“I strongly endorse Elissa Slotkin to be Michigan’s next United States Senator. Elissa has dedicated the last five and a half years to creating a better life for families in her district. It’s clear she knows what it takes to be a great legislator. She understands the skills you need in the Senate — not just to give speeches — but to actually get things done. From her leadership on the House Agriculture Committee during Farm Bill negotiations to securing millions of dollars for affordable child care, I’ve seen her in action.”
STATEMENT FROM REPUBLICAN MIKE ROGERS:
“I know you’ve heard it said by pundits in the past, but there is no doubt in my mind that this will be the most consequential election of our lifetime. A secure border, a thriving economy, safe streets, keeping communist China in check, and building a better life for our kids and grandkids all starts on November 5th. To those who voted for me in the primary, I want you to know that I will give it all I have to continue to earn your support. And for those of you who chose to go a different way — know that I will work just as hard to earn your trust, and your vote. Together, Michigan will make the difference — and together, we will Get America Back on Track!”
