The Upper Peninsula Construction Council is in the midst of its six-week camp to train high school students on the trades. This “Building Trades Summer” camp is supported by UP Michigan Works, local schools, and a variety of labor unions.
Executive Director Mike Smith tells RRN News that there are 24 students, aged 14-to-17, who are not only earning an education, but are also being paid $12 an hour. The camp is being held in Iron Mountain, and a Media Day will be held at the Laborers Local 1329 Joint Apprenticeship Training Center on Wednesday afternoon.
He says that these kidas will have a graduation om August 11th, and that the 2025 Summer Camp will be held in Escanaba and Gladstone.
Trades participating in the Summer Camp include International Union of Painters and Allied Trades Local 1011; Operating Engineers Local 324; Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers Local 2; UA Plumbers, Pipefitters & HVAC Local 111; International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 906; Sheet Metal Workers International Association Local 7; Ironworkers Local 8; Boilermakers Local 169; Laborers’ Union Local 1329; and Carpenters and Millwrights Local 1510.
