On Saturday, July 13, at 5:00 pm, after 20 years of walking together for brain tumor research, Walk in the Park will finish strong with a big event at Ludington Park. Live music with Bill Rinne, food trucks, and games will be on site following the 2-mile walk along the lake.
This year, the walker who raises the most money will win a $500-value grand prize from Caddis Shack Fishing Guides. The daughters of Don McInnis, an avid fisherman, have been putting on the walk for 20 years in his memory since losing him to glioblastoma in 2004.
Organizers encourage those who have participated in past walks to come back and share hope together one last time – with even more friends and family for the biggest walk ever. Over the years, more families of loved ones diagnosed with brain tumors joined the cause, with the family of Sue Anderson starting an annual bake sale the second year. The walk has provided support for this local community, in addition to providing $100,000 to support brain tumor research.
Funds raised stay local, benefitting the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center (UMBTC) through the Superior Health Foundation. Research and treatment institutions like the UMBTC in Marquette are making a difference at the local and global level. UMBTC has directly helped many brain tumor patients and their families in the Escanaba area.
Several local businesses have been especially generous in their support of the final walk. Top-tier sponsors this year are Caddis Shack, Dobbers Pasties, Embers Credit Union, Luft Insurance, Richards Printing, Skradski Family Funeral Homes, and Wells Lions Club.
People of all ages are welcome, and the event is dog-friendly. The walk is a scenic two-mile loop along the lake.
