The Hiawatha National Forest is pleased to share that the Grand Island Staircase Replacement Project is underway as part of the Great American Outdoors Act.
On June 10, contractors began the process of removing two staircases and replacing another near beaches on the island.
At Waterfall Beach and Mather Beach, the staircases will be removed and then converted into viewing platforms. In 2018 and 2019, these locations were affected by historically high lake levels and storms, suffering significant shoreline erosion. They have been closed since then due to the damage. The viewing platforms will have interpretive signs sharing the history of the island and will provide access to the public for the beautiful sights of Lake Superior.
The staircase at Hemlock Beach will be removed and a new one installed. The staircase was designed with gabion baskets filled with rocks and a crank and cable system that will allow staff to move the bottom portion upward in the winter months. Both of these features will protect the structure from damage caused by waves, wind, and ice in the winter, providing sustainable public access to the beach. Improved drainage and shoreline armoring, along with a wider wing wall will also enhance visitor experience.
These and surrounding areas may be affected by temporary administrative closures throughout summer and early fall, 2024, to provide space for construction crews. The closures may affect the trail between Mather Beach and Waterfall Beach, as well as Gamefence, Hemlock, and Hardwood campsites. For everyone’s safety, visitors are encouraged to avoid the construction areas, follow closure guidelines, and enjoy alternate locations on the islands while visiting.
Great American Outdoors Act projects are a step in the agency-wide effort to address deferred maintenance on the Forest while improving our visitor’s experience. These projects are part of the USDA Forest Service’s investment in our local community and an important step in restoring what our visitors love about national forests in the Eastern Region.
