A spaghetti fundraiser will be held Friday for the 24 artists at the East Ludington Art Gallery displaced by the fire last week in downtown Escanaba. The gallery has been an association of artists in Escanaba since 1981.
The building owned by Woerpel Properties at 1007 Ludington was severely damaged by the fire that destroyed two buildings early Wednesday morning. One person died in the fire.
Flooding in the basement of the building damaged the boiler and a crack in the front of the side wall is being examined. That means the gallery will have to find a new location.
All of the art in the gallery was damaged by heavy smoke. The fundraiser will be held Friday at the Bonifas Arts Center from 4 to 7 p.m. A $10 donation is being asked to support the group.
A tenant in the building is also being displaced and lost everything in the fire including her artwork and supplies. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support 26-year-old Lauren Hovland to get new supplies. She has been selling her artwork at the Escanaba Pop-Up Market and other venues.
Tenants on the other side of the fire are also dealing with the effects of the fire. Cleaning is starting to remove smoke damage at Beaten Path. Smoke also damaged product there. The store needs support.
Tenants in the next building are need of such items as furniture that they have been unable to replace. They were also affected by smoke damage.
