Communities that Care (CTC) would like to thank and recognize Marinette County Public Health, Marinette County Sheriff’s Department, and Public Health Delta and Menominee Counties for conducting their annual tobacco compliance checks throughout Marinette and Menominee Counties this past summer.
The Healthy Youth Coalition partners with these agencies to provide youth volunteers to assist in the checks. Compliance checks are an evidence-based initiative to ensure local retailers comply with the law by not selling tobacco and nicotine products to minors.
After completing the randomized checks this year, 90.5% of Marinette County’s retailers chose not to sell tobacco products to minors, and 100% of the checks in Menominee County did not sell tobacco/nicotine products to minors.
Prior to the checks, CTC coalition member, Mary Bauer, volunteered to provide SYNAR education to Menominee retail staff about the laws pertaining to underage youth access to tobacco and provided proper signage as a visual reminder to staff and customers. CTC also provided incentives from their federal DFC grant to the Healthy Youth Coalition youth participants who volunteered to participate in the Marinette County side of the compliance checks.
As the holidays approach, we would like to encourage local establishments and businesses to remind their employees that even during busier times, it is crucial to continue checking IDs to ensure that tobacco and nicotine products are not getting into the hands of our youth. According to youth focus groups that were conducted last spring by HYC and CTC, youth expressed that the #1 way to prevent youth nicotine use are by checking and/or scanning IDs at stores, as minors typically do not attempt to purchase tobacco and nicotine products underage when businesses have a reputation of checking IDs.
Communities that Care would like to also express gratitude and recognition to the following Marinette County retailers who passed the checks and complied with the law:
