The Mackinac County Sheriff says it has made an arrest in a 1997 case where a baby’s remains were found inside a pit toilet at the Garnet Lake Campground. The baby was named “Baby Garnet” by local officials back then, and the baby was never identified back then.
On the 20th anniversary of the death, Michigan State Police and Mackinac County Sheriff’s Deputies took another look at the case in 2017. And through DNA evidence and forensic genetic genealogy, they identified the remains this week, and went to Wyoming on Tuesday to arrest the baby’s mother, a woman who is now 58 years old. She is now awaiting extradition to Michigan.
