Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist submitted the signatures required to appear on the ballot for re-election. Gretchen Whitmer for Governor collected 30,000 signatures, double the number required by the state. With support from over 1,000 volunteers, the signatures were collected from all 83 of Michigan’s counties.
“Tough times call for tough people, and despite all the challenges we have faced over the past few years, we have made so much progress working together to build a stronger Michigan,” said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “By working together, we delivered the biggest education investment in state history without raising taxes, made sure schools could open safely, moved dirt to fix the damn roads, supported small businesses and kept Michigan on the cutting edge of auto manufacturing. I will keep working with anyone to get things done for Michiganders, just like I always have.”
“We have brought people together to get things done on the fundamental issues for Michiganders,” said Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist. “I fight every day to widen the pathways to opportunity in Michigan. We can lift people out of poverty by increasing access to high-quality early childhood education, securing clean drinking water for communities, and expanding fast, affordable internet everywhere. And I am excited about Michigan’s future as we stand tall together to build on this historic momentum, to move our state forward.”
“Gretchen Whitmer is a fierce advocate for our members and all of Michigan’s working families,” said Kris Saunders, Carpenter, Local 525. “By strengthening infrastructure in our state, Whitmer is supporting good paying jobs with prevailing wages, and creating opportunity for more workers with expanded skills training and investments in lasting jobs right here at home”
“Governor Whitmer understands education is the foundation of a stronger Michigan,” said Luke Haddad, a teacher at Plymouth-Canton Schools. “Whitmer delivered the largest education investment in state history without raising taxes, increased access to affordable pre-K and child care for tens of thousands of children, and ensured kids could safely return to the classroom, where they learn best. And the Governor is building on this progress by fighting for more resources to support students, parents, and educators.”
“Gretchen Whitmer has shown she will work with anyone to deliver for small businesses, our workers, and our communities. Whitmer cut taxes for small businesses, while providing over $420 million to support and retain jobs at thousands of local businesses across the state,” said Alita Kelly, Co-Founder of South East Market. “Governor Whitmer continues to attract good paying, lasting jobs by investing in our state, putting Michigan first.”
During their first term, Governor Whitmer and Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist have delivered on the fundamentals that Michiganders care most about. Whitmer and Gilchrist have made historic investments in infrastructure, education, and clean water while supporting more than 100,000 good-paying jobs. Governor Whitmer has also been focused on putting more money back in the pockets of Michiganders by signing bipartisan legislation to lower the price of prescription drugs and securing $400 refund checks for Michigan drivers.
Governor Whitmer has been endorsed for re-election by Michigan AFSCME Council 25, the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights, the American Federation of Teachers, Michigan Education Association, Clean Water Action, the Sierra Club, and the Michigan AFL-CIO.
