Lake Superior State University student Amanda Popovich collects an Atlantic salmon for science and future anglers on the Upper Great Lakes. She was gathering female and male Atlantics on Tuesday at LSSU’s hatchery in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., for eggs and milt.
This fish’s fertilized eggs will be released as fingerlings during the summer of 2020. Each year the hatchery releases up to 25,000 Atlantic salmon, sustaining a regional sports fishery that’s known the world over.
