Voters in Schoolcraft County rejected a proposal to build a new county jail on Tuesday.
The vote for the three mill, 20-year proposal was 1,943 no to 1,835 yes. The proposal would have seen the county use the former Michigan National Guard Armory in Manistique to build a 44-bed facility, replacing the current 24-bed facility.
Meanwhile, Schoolcraft County voters approved the five-year millage proposal for the county’s bus system, 2,384 yes to 1,361 no.
In contested races, Democrat Robin LaCroix defeated Republican Issac Swisher for a spot on the Schoolcraft County Road Commission, 2,102 to 1,496. And in the 4th district for the Schoolcraft County Board, Democrat John Shiner beat Republican Paul Walker, 309-267. In the third district, Corey Barr defeated Larry Mersnick, 435-376.
