Voters in the Bark River-Harris Schools voted in favor of borrowing four million dollars, and levy 1-point-14 mills, to match a 3-point-9 million dollar grant that the district will receive from the Hannahville Indian Community. The vote was 702 yes to 602 no.
Superintendent Jason Lockwood says the vote shows the community backs its kids as the district continues to grow, with an all-time high enrollment of 740 students.
“We’re very happy,” Lockwood told RRN News. “We feel very blessed and supported by our community. Some great things are coming our way. It’s been a pretty good night for us here in Bark River-Harris.”
Lockwood says the money, along with the grant, would build a new cafeteria, four new classrooms, a new bus garage, and parking lot improvements.
“We’re going to be working with our architects, and we’ve already started some of that work,” Lockwood told RRN News. “In the next few months, there will be a lot of planning and doing the finalizing of the plans, getting all the permits applied for, and hopefully come next spring, we’ll be breaking ground.”
