The Michigan company that opened its first bretail store in 1962 is closing its final Upper Peninsula store on Sunday.
K-Mart once had stores across the U.P., but that will end Sunday night as the store in Menominee closes for the final time. The closure has been known for several months, and this weekend, only a small portion of the building was open for business. Sales of up to 90-percent off on the last remaining items continued, with some jewelery, baby clothes and supplies, and Christmas decorations remaining to be sold.
Escanaba’s K-Mart store closed in October of 2017.
The Sault Ste. Marie store closed in December of 2016.
The Iron Mountain location closed in January of 2015.
The Marquette and Houghton locations closed back in 2002 as the retailer has struggled to compete against the likes of Wal-Mart, Meijer, and Target, as well as on-line merchants.
