A Winter Storm on the day before Thanksgiving is causing probelms across the Upper Peinsula.
As much as 13 inches of snow has already been reported in the Ishpeming-Negaunee area, with ten inches reported in the Copper Country. A semi truck was reported in the ditch in Baraga County, there are power outages in the Hermansville, Rock, and Brampton areas, and there are numerous reports of downed tree branches and power lines across the western part of the Upper Peninsula.
One weather spotter reported four inches of snow just outside of the City of Gladstone, but in downtown Escanaba, as of lunch time, it was a sloppy mess, with mostly rain, mixed with snow, and about an inch of slush.
A Winter Storm Warning remains inn effect for the entire Upper Peninsula except for Menominee County, until 7:00 ET/6:00 CT. Roads are extremely haazardous in many parts of the U.P.
Schools closed on Wednesday included Marquette, Gwinn, Ishpeming, Powell Township, North Dickinson and Carney-Nadeau.
In Marquette County, Administrator Scott Erbisch announced that the Marquette County Courthouse and Jail curtailed its operations for Wednesday, with only those employees listed on the “work force reduction” list needed to report to work. All court hearings were cancelled and will be rescheduled for later. The Marquette County Health Department also had only its essential personnel report to work, with all scheduled appointments cancelled.
In Schoolcraft County, County Board Chair Craig Reiter announced that offices and Probate, District, and Circuit Court offices in the Schoolcraft County Courthouse closed early, at 12:00 noon.
In the Copper Country, M-DOT reported that Eastbound and westbound M-26 is closed until further notice between Great Sand Bay and west of Eagle Harbor due to water and debris over the roadway. The Keweenaw County Road Commission is monitoring the situation and anticipates the roadway may be reopened by this evening, depending on weather and wave conditions.
