Actors From the London Stage (AFTLS), a five-actor, Shakespeare troupe is coming to the Arts Center at Lake Superior State University for a week-long residency the last week of October.
AFTLS is a nationwide outreach program of Shakespeare at Notre Dame. The mission of this program is “to make exciting Shakespeare, performed by fine professional actors, available and affordable to American colleges and universities in the context of an extraordinary, weeklong teaching experience.”
The actors will perform Hamlet three times while in Sault Ste Marie, including one sold out show for local middle and high school students. They will teach multiple workshops during the week in various LSSU classes. In these workshops, the actors will cater their lessons to the subject area of the classroom visited focusing on anything from presentation skills to understanding the play itself.
Arts Center Director and LSSU Theatre Professor Spencer Christensen is thrilled to bring this exciting experience to campus. “Bringing this type of show and educational residency to LSSU, is exactly the kind of opportunity the Arts Center looks to host and share with the campus, Sault Ste Marie, and the EUP community.”
The Arts Center received support from the Duncan MacLaren Family Fund for the Performing Arts, Issues and Intellect Fund, Arts Midwest Touring Fund, LSSU Charter School Office, and LSSU Honors Program to assist in bringing Actors From the London Stage to Sault Ste Marie.
Hamlet performances are October 30 and 31 at 7pm. The show runs 2 ½ hours with intermission. Tickets are $10 for seniors and adults, $5 for children 17 and under. Free parking is available in Lot K, in front of the Arts Center, and Lot E, behind the Cisler Center. The Arts Center is wheelchair accessible.
