Citing decision-making that ignored overwhelming public input, legal protections for the Great Lakes, climate destabilization, and the threat of a catastrophic oil spill, Michigan Interfaith Power & Light has called on Governor Rick Snyder to rescind his agreement with Enbridge and, instead, shut down the Line 5 oil pipeline immediately
“It is morally irresponsible to continue to put the Great Lakes in jeopardy, particularly at a time when we face so many other serious issues in Michigan around water,” said Rev. Deb Hansen, board member of Michigan Interfaith Power & Light. “The anchor strike on Line 5 in April should have been a wake-up call to decommission Line 5. Instead, the agreement puts the Straits at risk for another decade.”
An oil tunnel under the Straits would ensure the indefinite operation of Enbridge’s Line 5, while ignoring the growing destabilization of the climate. Michigan Interfaith Power & Light believes a tunnel may never be built and is just one more delay tactic to keep oil pumping to Canada.
