The latest winter storm has dumped up to a foot of snow across parts of the northern Upper Peninsula on Sunday, and the problem in the southern half of the UP has been ice. Roads have been in very poor condition throughout the day, and into the night on Sunday.
Power outages have been widespread in Dickinson County, in particular, on the west side of Iron Mountain that closed businesses along US-2 for hours, including big stores like Walmart.
Downed power lines just west of Escanaba forced US-2-and-41 to be closed for hours Sunday evening, and travel was still being strongly discouraged into the overnight hours.
Numerous schools have been closed for Monday. Bay College is opening both of its campuses two hours late on Monday, and there has been no announcement from Northern Michigan University.
The National Weather Service reported 12.6 inches of snowfall at its office just east of Negaunee. There was also a report of 8.3 inches falling in the Houghton-Hancock area. In Delta County, a report of a half-inch of ice falling in the Rock area on Sunday. The Menominee airport automated weather station had a 35-mile-per-wind gust and freezing rain.
Conditions were expected to gradually improve Monday morning, but it will take time for road crews to get all of the roads cleared of snow and ice.
