With the re-certification as a Redevelopment Ready Community, businesses in downtown Escanaba are now able to apply for a state Match on Main grant to improve or upgrade their business.
The $25,000 grant is only available to communities with RRC certification. Escanaba was first certified in 2017. The city has recently been working to re-certify, completing the task this month.
That means the city and businesses in Escanaba’s downtown are again eligible for additional programs such as the Match on Main grant.
“The funds can be used for such things as renovating the interior of the business, developing an outdoor dining area, marketing, technical upgrades or working capital. It is primarily aimed at supporting their growth and development in the community and enhance their presence on Ludington Street,” said Craig Woerpel, executive director of the Escanaba Downtown Development Authority.
Applications for the grant are being taken by the Escanaba DDA through March 3. Businesses will need to match 10 percent of the grant. The DDA can submit two applications to the state. If granted, one business will receive $25,000.
Additional information and an application is available at escanabdda.org. The grant is funded by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. The RRC program helps to streamline the process that businesses may have when looking to develop in a community.
