A rescue took place Thursday in the eastern U.P. when a man found himself pinned beneath large sheets of drywall, which weighed approximately 700 pounds.
Thanks to the quick actions of Trooper Paul Ferraro from MSP Sault Ste. Marie Post, the man was able to escape with only minor injuries.
On 10/31/24, a 43-year-old man from Levering, MI was working alone at the MSP Sault Ste Marie post which has been undergoing construction. The man was attempting to transport large drywall sheets when they unexpectedly fell, trapping him underneath. He managed to call for help and Trooper Ferraro, who was inside the post at the time, faintly heard the man’s cries for help and immediately rushed outside.
Trooper Ferraro lifted the heavy drywall sheets up enough for the trapped man to get out. Thankfully, due to Trooper Ferraro’s response, the man did not suffer any major injuries. The man expressed sincere gratitude for Trooper Ferraro’s efforts. “This incident could have had a much more serious outcome,” said Trooper Ferraro. “I’m just glad I was nearby to help.”
When working alone, whether at home or on the job, it’s important to prioritize safety. Before starting any project, plan your tasks carefully and identify potential hazards to ensure you are prepared for any challenges. Additionally, it may be a good idea to notify a friend or family member about your work plans, including the expected duration and location. This way, someone will be aware of your activities and can check on you if needed.
