The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians board of directors announced today that it has approved a resolution requiring all five of its Kewadin casino locations to transition to smoke-free establishments. This decision reflects the tribe’s commitment to prioritizing the health and comfort of both casino visitors and employees and creating a more welcoming environment for all.
“The board’s decision to go smoke-free at our Kewadin casinos is another step on our broader path focusing on health and wellness of the communities we serve,” said Sault Tribe Chairman Austin Lowes. “We’ve been very focused as a tribal government on improving health, and this transition to smoke-free casinos is the right step forward that ensures we are creating a welcoming experience at Kewadin facilities that everyone can enjoy.”
This shift comes in response to growing feedback from guests and staff members who have voiced strong preferences for a smoke-free experience inside the casinos. The Sault Tribe recognizes the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy atmosphere at its Kewadin properties, ensuring that everyone can enjoy their time on the gaming floor, at restaurants or while attending events without exposure to secondhand smoke.
“This policy change aligns with our mission to create the very best experience possible for all our guests,” said Allen Kerridge, CEO of Kewadin Casinos. “We’ve heard from many customers and Team Members who feel a smoke-free environment is the right step forward. We’re excited to meet their needs and provide an even more welcoming atmosphere at all our properties.”
Kewadin Casinos will start implementing its smoke-free policy within the next 6 weeks.
