Bay College is partnering with the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center (OGJVAMC) to support veterans through “Cards of Hope.” Students, faculty, and staff at Bay College, as well as any interested community members, are invited to make cards that will be included in care packages sent to Veterans during National Suicide Awareness Month in September.
“In 2021 (the most recent year data is provided), 6,392 Veterans died by suicide,” states Sharon Anastas, OGJVAMC’s Suicide Prevention Coordinator. “One death is too many. We want to ensure our Veterans that our work is never done and that they are not alone. We use the term ‘Anchors of Hope,’ as hope is essential to life and hope serves as an important role in suicide prevention efforts. We want these cards to be a small beacon of hope that our Veterans are thought of and that their communities support them.”
Card-making events will take place on both Bay College Campuses:
Escanaba Campus
Thursday, September 19 from 12:30pm – 3:00pm ET in the Bay College Library
Iron Mountain Campus
Thursday, September 26 from 12:30pm – 2:30pm CT in the Lower Commons.
Drop in during either or both events and help provide hope for Veterans through these homemade cards. Supplies for card-making and snacks will be provided at both events.
