President Biden is dropping out of the 2024 presidential race. This comes after Democratic leaders for weeks have expressed concerns about the 81-year-old’s mental fitness and his path to victory over Donald Trump.
In a statement posted on X, the President said he believes it’s in the Democratic party’s best interest for him ” to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the reminder of my term.”
The Democratic National Convention to nominate the party’s candidate for president is scheduled to be held August 19th through the 22nd.
Donald Trump says President Biden will go “down as the single worst president.” Immediately after Biden announced he was exiting the campaign, Trump posted,”Biden “was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve.” He goes on to say, “We will suffer greatly because of his presidency, but we will remedy the damage he has done very quickly.” Trump survived an assassination attempt just eight days ago.
PRESIDENT BIDEN’S STATEMENT:
My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.
