Marquette County Undersheriff Dan Willey has died after a short illness.
The department announced Willey’s death Thursday afternoon. It ends a long, three-decade career that began with the United States Air Force, and for many years, a tenure with the Ishpeming Police Department.
Willey started as an entry-level police officer in Ishpeming, before he moved up the ranks, working as a detective sergeant, and eventually, serving as the Ishpeming Police Chief.
Willey left Ishpeming to work under Sheriff Greg Zyburt, who was elected in 2017, after Zyburt had served as the Chocolay Township Police Chief. Zyburt appointed Willey to the position in 2017.
No further details were offered Thursday by the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department, other than the offer of “condolences and prayers to his family”.
