For the first time in its history, the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians will open its walleye hatchery to the public. Both tribal and non-tribal community members are invited to come learn about its walleye rearing efforts as the fisheries staff prepares to transport and release upwards of 1 million walleye fingerlings into nearby lakes and streams.
The Sault Tribe has been raising and stocking walleye to support commercial and sport fishing in the 1836 Ceded Territory since 1995. In that time, fisheries program staff estimate that it has released more than 18 million walleye into nearby lakes and streams. These efforts generate an estimated $2.5 million economic impact for the commercial fishing industry and $2.14 million in sport fishing activity each year.
This event is open to the press. It will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 Wednesday night at 15464 Shunk Road in Dafter, just outside of Sault Ste. Marie.
