As the 2023-2024 academic year comes to a close and summer courses are in full swing, Bay College proudly reflects on a period of growth, achievement, and dedicated support for its diverse student body. The institution continues to play a crucial role in providing accessible education and fostering economic success in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
This past academic school year, Bay College awarded an impressive $569,000 in foundation scholarships to 369 deserving students, demonstrating Bay’s commitment to making education affordable and accessible— everyone deserves the opportunity to receive a college education. Funds that help students achieve their educational goals are supported by contributions and gifts from community organizations, businesses, Bay employees, families, foundations, and individual donors. With 64% of our students receiving financial aid and 33% being Pell eligible, financial support remains a cornerstone of the College’s mission.
Bay College saw a 9% increase in overall enrollment, bringing the student population to 1,996. Notably, 71% of Bay students attend part-time, reflecting the flexibility offered to accommodate diverse lifestyles and commitments, especially with adult learners. Bay College’s dual enrollment program continues to thrive, with 583 high school students participating— a remarkable 19% increase over the past five years! Taking college courses while in high school allows students to get ahead of the game toward their future careers and equips them for college success. Families also save money on college costs, as school districts pay the tuition and fees for dual enrollees in qualified programs. Some Early College students in a 5th year of high school receive their college credentials prior to their high school graduation.
Among our student body, 39% of Bay College students are first-generation college students, meaning they are the first in their family to attend college. Additionally, 14% of our students identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), and women make up 62% of our student population. As our community continues to change, Bay provides an inclusive and supportive environment for all learners.
Bay College conferred 332 degrees and certificates in the previous academic year across various fields of study. Bay’s top programs include Nursing, Liberal Arts, Business, Social Work, Criminal Justice, Early Childhood Education, and Welding. These programs, among many others, continue to attract students seeking a high-quality education and career-ready skills.
The Michigan Reconnect and Frontliner initiatives have been a significant success at Bay College, with 230 students currently enrolled and 54 degrees and certificates conferred to date. These programs provide opportunities for adult learners to return to education and further their careers.
