UP Health System – Marquette (UPHS – Marquette) is pleased to announce Brian Matthews, certified medical assistant (CMA) with the Brain & Spine Center, has been recognized as its 2024 Mercy Award winner. The Mercy Award recognizes one employee from each of Lifepoint Health’s facilities who profoundly touches the lives of others and best represents the spirit and values on which the company was founded.
Established in 2001, the Mercy Award is an annual recognition program that honors the life and contributions of Scott Mercy, Lifepoint’s founding chairman and chief executive officer. The award is considered the highest honor a Lifepoint employee can receive.
“Brian embodies the qualities of a true healthcare hero—dedicated, compassionate, and always willing to go the extra mile to make a difference in the lives of others,” said Tonya Darner, chief executive officer, UPHS – Marquette. “He is a shining example of the values we hold dear at UPHS – Marquette and we are honored to recognize his outstanding contributions and unwavering commitment to our organization’s mission and values.”
Brian has been part of the UPHS – Marquette family since 2000, starting as a custodian and transitioning to patient transport before beginning his current role in 2017. No matter his role or the task at hand, his dedication to excellence shines. He approaches his work with diligence, attention to detail, and a genuine concern for not only the well-being of his patients but his fellow colleagues as well.
“What sets Brian apart is his genuine love for people,” said Shaquita Jones, operations manager, UPHS – Brain & Spine Center. “He treats each person he meets with the utmost respect and dignity, creating an atmosphere of warmth and acceptance wherever he goes. His ability to connect with others on a deeply personal level is a rare and beautiful gift.”
“Patients coming for appointments even in other areas of the clinic have stopped to see if Brian is in his office just to say ‘hi’,” added Christina Rose, MD, MPH, neurologist and neurophysiologist, UPHS – Marquette. “He is friendly and inclusive and not only celebrates others, but he also listens and is empathetic when needed.”
