Camp STAR, a UP wide bereavement camp for young children who have experienced the death of a loved one, is desperately in search for male camp volunteers.
There are several boy campers who still need to be paired up with a male volunteer. If you are, or you know someone between the ages of 18-25, please consider committing to a weekend of camp. Maybe your son, grandson, co-worker or friend would be interested.
This year camp will be in Big Bay, August 9-11th with volunteers arriving a day early for training (Aug. 8th).
For those who haven’t heard of Camp STAR; it’s a grief camp designed for children ages 8-17 who have experienced the death of a parent, friend, or loved one. The weekend long camp combines traditional, fun, camp activities with grief education and emotional support. All camp activities are facilitated by caring, trained professionals. There’s hiking, swimming, crafts and campfires, just like you would expect at any summer camp. But at Camp STAR activities are combined with memorializing and celebrating those who have died and getting a better understanding of the grief that comes with.
The camp is free for all and it doesn’t matter where you live in the Upper Peninsula; anyone can be a camper or volunteer. Camp STAR is also still accepting applications for campers if you know a child who might benefit from the camp.
Each camper gets paired with a buddy, a young adult, who will participate in all the camp events alongside the camper. Buddies do not need experience with loss, but must to fill out an application and go through a background check to participate.
Again, Camp STAR is looking for all types of volunteers but currently has a large need for male buddies. We need your help.
