NOTE: The 120 nurses at the former War Memorial Hospital (now owned by MyMichigan Health) were on strike from last Monday through this Saturday morning. A bargaining session is set for May 10, and nurses are scheduled to work without a new contract until at least then.
PRESS RELEASE FROM SAULT TRIBE OF CHIPPEWA CHAIRMAN:
With the nurses strike at MyMichigan Medical Center Sault now in its fifth day, Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Chairman issued the following statement in support of local nurses and their fight for better wages and working conditions:
“As a former medial social worker and current Tribe Chairman, I stand in full support of the nurses at MyMichigan Medical Center who have been struggling to reach a fair contract agreement that will provide better wages and working conditions at the hospital. I’ve seen firsthand how nurses play a vital role in the health and wellness of our community, and it’s critical that their pay and benefits are aligned with other hospitals in the region. This not only will benefit those nurses and their families in our community, it will help ensure that MyMichigan Medical Center is able to recruit and retain enough nurses to safely staff the hospital so that patients can receive the best care possible,” said Chairman Lowes.
“I am calling on hospital management to put the health of our community first and work in good faith with local nurses to reach a fair contract agreement as soon as possible.”
