UP Health System-Marquette (UPHS – Marquette), a Duke LifePoint hospital, has been reverified as a Level II Trauma Center by the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) after an extensive review and rigorous onsite evaluation of every aspect of its trauma program.
This achievement is the fifth trauma center verification for UPHS – Marquette since its first in 2006.
UPHS – Marquette is the only Level II Trauma Center that is accredited to provide crucial, life-saving services within a 160-mile radius of Marquette, MI, triaging for more than 900 trauma admissions each year. It is also the regional referral center for patients of the Upper Peninsula.
Level II Trauma Centers are equipped with advanced treatments, technology and highly skilled trauma surgeons and subspecialists who stand ready 24/7 to provide lifesaving care to critically injured patients.
Elements of Level II Trauma Centers include:
- 24-hour immediate coverage by general surgeons, as well as coverage by the specialties of cardiac surgery, hemodialysis, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, radiology and critical care
- Trauma prevention and continuing education programs for staff
- A comprehensive quality assessment program
Level II Trauma Centers are also expected to provide initial definitive trauma care for a wide range of injuries and injury severity and may take on additional responsibilities in the region related to education, system leadership, and disaster planning. When a trauma activation is implemented at UPHS – Marquette, a dedicated team specially trained in caring for trauma patients comes to the Emergency Department and is ready for care upon the patient’s arrival.
“The ACS establishes the standards of care for treating those who are severely injured and is an important advocate for all surgical patients,” said Tonya Darner, chief executive officer, UPHS – Marquette. “After a comprehensive review by their nationally recognized trauma experts, our recertification shows our commitment to our community to continue to meet and exceed national benchmarks for care when people need it most.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, unintentional injury is the leading cause of death in the United States. Care provided in a trauma center decreases the chance of death following injury by 25 percent compared to care in ordinary hospitals. In addition to providing the necessary resources for trauma care, ACS level II verification also means that centers like UPHS – Marquette address the needs of injured patients across the entire spectrum of care, providing patients in the Upper Peninsula with access to important injury prevention programs, pre-hospital care and transportation, acute hospital care and rehabilitation.
“As a Level II Trauma Center, we are able to provide comprehensive care that begins with injury prevention. If an injury does occur, we’re ready with 24-hour immediate access to trauma surgeons and other appropriate specialists,” said Jodi McCollum, PA-C, trauma program manager at UPHS – Marquette. “With programs and resources that are not available in most hospitals, our role in patient care often extends beyond our initial encounters. Trauma patients and their loved ones can be assured that they are receiving the highest level of emergency care at the most critical moments.”
