The Menominee-Delta-Schoolcraft Communi Action Agency Early Childhood Program will be offering a new parenting series in Menominee, Delta, and Schoolcraft counties starting next week. It runs for five weeks, and provides child care and meals for those who attend. The first session is on Tuesday, Jan. 16, from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m., at the Escanaba, Menominee, and Manistique Early Childhood Centers. There is no charge to attend.
Angie Gardner is with the agency’s early childhood program. She tells RRN News that there’s a lot to be learned at these sessions.
“Families come in, we provide all the materials, and what’s great about this series is that you don’t have to be at every single session to be able to get something from it,” Gardner said. “This for all community families. We go over things like assertiveness and encouragement in parentling. Offering kids choices. Empathy and positive intent is another thing we go over. It’s really a strength-based parenting approach on how to talk to kids, and kind of gives perents a different lanuage to use,”
She says that getting angry with kids, which is easy to do in many situations, doesn’t solve much in the end.
“It’s very easy to get our emotions worked up,” she said. “We get flustered, we get frustrated, we get angry. And when we raise our level to that point, the kids aren’t hearing us anymore.”
