In 2015, nearly 70 percent of current adult smokers in the United States said they wanted to quit.
In 2018, about 55 percent of smokers had made an attempt, but only about eight percent were successful.
To help reduce these numbers, the Marquette County Health Department supports the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout@ event on the third Thursday in November, as the day to commit to a vape or smokefree life.
Jennifer Eyler, Tobacco Treatment Specialist stated, “Quitting vaping (or smoking) can be very difficult due to the highly addictive nature of nicotine. Typically, it takes several attempts to be successful. Having support increases your chances of stopping for good.”
The Marquette County Health Department would like to highlight resources available to assist both adults and youth in our community on their journey to becoming nicotine-free.
The My Life My Quit program is designed specifically for young people who vape (or smoke). People under 1 8 can text 36072 or call 1-855-891-9989 for free, confidential help. View more at: https://mi.mylifemyquit.org/index.
INDEPTH (Intervention for Nicotine Dependence: Education, Prevention, Tobacco and Health) is a new, convenient alternative to suspension or citation that helps schools and communities address the teen vaping problem in a more supportive way. INDEPTH teaches students about nicotine dependence, establishing healthy alternatives, and how to kick the addiction that got them in trouble in the first place. This new, free education program is available for any school by e-mailing agleason@mqtco.org
The Michigan Tobacco Quitlink offers free information, treatment referral, an online program, and text messaging 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The service is self-paced and customized for each person. Call I -800-QUITNOW (1-800-784-8669) or enroll online at: https://michigan.quitlogix.org/en-US/.
