The City of Negaunee announced the completion of its highly anticipated beach expansion project on Teal Lake with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on June 19, 2023, to celebrate the project’s successful completion and opening to the public.
Thanks to a generous grant of $82,600 from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), the City of Negaunee completed multiple upgrades to the Teal Lake shoreline beach area. The upgrade recommendations came from Michigan State University’s
Teal Lake Shoreline Climate and Health Adaptation Vision project, completed in July 2020.
The beach expansion project cost $107,700, and the City contributed 25 percent of the funding, amounting to $25,100. The City held several public meetings throughout the planning and design phase to provide residents with opportunities to contribute their input. The engagement of various commissions, including the Planning Commission, Parks and Recreation Commission, and the City Council, ensured a comprehensive and inclusive decision-making process.
The project provided an enhanced beach experience for residents and visitors with notable upgrades, including expanding the sandy area from 1000 square feet to 1800 square feet, relocating street surface stormwater discharge pipes, and installing ADA components such as a picnic table, ramp, and beach mat. In addition, the project added new trashcans, picnic tables, signage, and planting of trees, further enhancing the overall aesthetics and functionality of the beach.
