The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is concerned about wildfires across the state as warm, dry, windy condituons continue this week.
DNR Fire Specialist Jeff Vasher says we all should make fire safety a top priority when having a campfire, and other burning is not allowed rignt now.
“We’re not giving oit any burn permits, so you’re not allowed to free-burn right now,” Vasher said. “If you fo have a campfire, just make sure you’ve got water and make sure you put it out. It’s very dry out in the woods right now. We’ve had a lot of rain, but witrh everything (vegetation) dead, it doesn’t take long for it to dry out. Especially this week, we’ve had very low humidity, so it really dries it out quick. I would say the widlfire risk is for the whole state.”
On Saturday, the Escanaba Public Safety Department helped the DNR put out a brush fire along 18th Road in Wells Township. That started in a buring garbage pile and went out of control, spreadin into a wooded area that also contained old bales of hey. It took about two hours to put that fire out, and there were no injiries.
