The 21 members of Holy Name Catholic School’s Class of 2019 will be graduating this spring from area high schools, including Escanaba Area High School and Gladstone High School.
The group visited Holy Name on Thursday, May 4, and attended a special Mass celebrated by Father Timothy Ferguson, pastor of St. Joseph and St. Patrick’s Church, with Deacon Bob Berbohm assisting.
Holy Name Principal Joseph Carlson spoke to the graduates after Mass, reminiscing with them about their time at Holy Name, and reminding them of their votes for class favorites. Carlson assured the students that he is proud of all of their achievements, and encouraged the graduates to always remember Holy Name as they go on in their futures.
Holy Name Alumni/Development Director Michelle Bink also spoke to the students, and gifted them, on behalf of Holy Name School, San Damiano crucifixes, saying, “Take this cross with you wherever you go, as a reminder of how much Holy Name Catholic School loves their alumni.”
Students then played the current HNCS eighth grade class of 2023 in games of volleyball, basketball and a rousing game of dodgeball. The students were then treated to a lunch of one of their favorites, nachos with all the fixings, and special gourmet decorated cookies.
After graduating from high school this year, most of the students will attend college. Three of the students will also play collegiate-level sports. Mari Bink committed to Saginaw Valley State University to play basketball; Carney Salo committed to Northwood University to play softball; and Katelyn Stalboerger committed to North Dakota State College of Science to play volleyball. Four of the Holy Name graduates are in the Academic Top 10 at Escanaba High School: Nick Hamlin, Grace Sviland, Carney Salo and Cierra Scott.
