A home was damaged by fire in downtown Escanaba early Monday morning.
The Escanaba Public Safety Department got the call at about 12:50 in the morning to come to 302 North 15th Street, which is actually a shared unit with 300 North 15th. Flames were seen through the windows of the building’s second floor, and crews quickly entered the home to look for people who might be inside.
Large plumes of smoke could be seen throughout the area as surrounding township fire departments were called out under mutual aid.
Two people who were home at the time were taken to OSF St. Francis Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Crews were on the scene for several hours before eventully putting out the flames. Public Safety believes that the fire was caused by an oxygen tank that caught fire.
Escanaba Public Safety was assisted at the scene by the Delta County Sheriff’s Department, For River Township Fire Department, DTE Energy, Escanaba City Electric, Delta County Central Dispatch, and Rampart EMS.
