Michigan State Police troopers from the Gladstone Post were dispatched to US-2 in eastern Delta County on Friday for a report of a traffic crash involving several vehicles.
Troopers say that a white Toyota SUV and a black Chevrolet SUV were headed eastbound on US-2 near the Fishdam River in Garden Township at just before 4:00 Friday afternoon.
That’s when a Canadian semi truck, heading westbound, lost control and drifted towards the side of the road. The driver tried to steer back into his lane, but crossed the center line and struck the Toyota SUV head-on.
Two people in the Toyota, 47-year-old Gerald Weaver and 46-year–old Tara Weaver, both from Escanaba, were injured, and were pronounced dead on the scene.
The semi truck driver, who has not been identified, was not hurt.
Trooeprs say that trailer portion of the semi was still in the road, and a third vehicle, a Chevrolet SUV, hit the end of the trailer. The driver, 38-year-old man from Oshkosh, Wisconsin, was pinned inside the vehicle and broke several bones.
Then, a moment later, two more vehicles collided while trying to stop.
No injuries were reported in that crash.
MSP Troopers from the Gladstone Post and Manistique Outpost, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers from the St. Ignace Post, deputies from the Delta County Sheriff’s Department, DNR, Rampart EMS, Manistique EMS, Inwood Township Fire and EMS, Thompson Township Fire, Nahma Township Fire, Garden Township Fire, Gene’s Towning and the Delta County Road Commission assisted on the scene.
