Bay College is one of four stops on the OneUP Mind Trekkers 2023 Tour. Bay’s event is scheduled for Friday, January 27 at the Escanaba Campus.
In partnership with Bay College, over six-hundred-and-fifty 8th Grade students from surrounding counties will be on campus exploring “STEM” which stands for: science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Demonstrations and exhibitors range from making ice cream to thermal imaging, or standing inside a giant bubble, and a gravity well – and so much more! There are over 60+ demonstrations students can take part in.
“We’re thrilled to welcome 8th Graders who are coming from three different counties in the U.P. this Friday. It’s been a great experience working with our partners at the ISD, MichiganWorls!, Michigan Tech University of course, our Bay team, and the local businesses volunteering their time and resources. Everyone has pulled through to help make this event a success. Exposure to STEM is incredibly important and this event helps make learning exciting,” says Amy Reddinger, VP of Arts and Sciences and DEB at Bay College.
Mind Trekkers is a flagship program of Michigan Technological University’s Center for Educational Outreach where undergraduate and graduate MiTech students become “Mind Trekker Guides”, who travel across the country delivering high-energy, hands-on, STEM demonstrations for K-12 students, inspiring youth to pursue post-secondary education.
“One of the many wonderful things about the Mind Trekkers event is that all of their demonstrations are available for free on their website. Anyone can download instructions to run a STEM experiment at home or in their classroom,” says Jessica Beaver, Communications and Events Coordinator at Bay College. “You can access instructions here: https://www.mtu.edu/mindtrekkers/demonstrations/.” All lesson plans have educational standards and safety information included in them.
