After a historic election in which the people of Michigan ushered in a Democratic majority in both legislative chambers, members of the 102nd House Democratic Caucus elected state Representative Joe Tate (D-Detroit) as the next Speaker of the House and state Representative Abraham Aiyash (D-Hamtramck) Majority Floor Leader.
“It’s a tremendous honor to be chosen to serve as the next Speaker of the House. The people of Michigan chose Democratic leadership for the future of Michigan, and we have a terrific caucus that will be legislating from the majority in the 102nd Legislature,” Tate said. “This is a historic opportunity to do true work for the people — to forge a future for Michigan that supports the needs of all Michiganders.”
Tate will be the first Black man to serve as Speaker of the House and has served two terms in the chamber. Aiyash will be the first Muslim to serve as Majority Floor Leader in the chamber.
“We’ve been very clear about our priorities for years, in the bills we’ve introduced, the causes we’ve championed, and as well in the issues we’ve campaigned on all across this state,” Tate said. “The people of Michigan chose Democrats to lead this state in the House, the Senate, and from the governor’s office, and that’s because they know where we stand and what values we share. We’ve always worked to listen to our communities, the values we work toward here come from the concerns and the lives of the people we represent. We’re certainly not surprised this resonated with the people of Michigan on Election Day, and nobody should be surprised to see us govern just as consistently in those values.”
“We are very excited to get to work for the people of Michigan. This is their chamber and it’s time it returns to doing real work for the people,” Aiyash said. “We’ve got a robust platform that we know the majority of Michiganders expect us to deliver. We’ve got serious work to do to protect our air, land and water, and ensure we have a thriving economy that supports working families from Marquette to Monroe. The people expect us to do the job and we have every intention to hit the ground running.”
