Michigan Veteran Homes has announced its upcoming schedule of Veterans Day activities to honor its veteran members and those who served before them.
The Michigan Veteran Homes D.J. Jacobetti (MVHDJJ) will host a special Veterans Day ceremony for members in their chapel at 11 a.m. The ceremony will include remarks by Ron Oja, administrator for MVHDJJ; U.S. Navy Veteran Joe Boogren; and U.S. Air Force Veteran and MVHDJJ Chaplain Dr. Jim Elenbaas. The ceremony will include a posting of the colors led by the Northern Michigan University (NMU) Army ROTC Color Guard while the pledge of allegiance will be led by U.S. Army Veteran and VFW District 14 Commander Mike Brady. The ceremony will also include a performance of Taps led by U.S. Navy Veteran Charlie Hawes and music by soloist Toni Saari. Members will enjoy a special Veterans Day dinner provided by dietary services and the day will conclude with a trip to watch NMU Men’s Ice Hockey.
Michigan Veteran Homes at Chesterfield Township will host a veterans recognition ceremony at 11 a.m. with remarks led by Col. David J. Spehar, the vice wing commander of the 127th Wing, Selfridge Air National Guard Base; Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel; and Gold Star Mother Ms. Judy Gentz. Hospice of Michigan will be hosting a special Pinning/Honor Ceremony for members. Each of the members will be pinned and presented with a certificate honoring their service. The ceremony will begin at 4:00 p.m. There will also be a candlelight dinner in the multimedia room with an A/V presentation highlighting each member’s service including awards received.
Michigan Veteran Homes at Grand Rapids will be joined by Paul Carmichael for a music presentation at 10:30 a.m. followed by a special Veterans Day lunch provided by dietary services. A flag ceremony led by the United Veterans Council of Kent County will occur at 1:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend the lowering of the 30 by 50-foot flag, which hangs between two trees at 3000 Monroe Ave. NE and is visible from Riverside Park. Members will enjoy a Veteran’s Appreciation Cash Bingo sponsored by Ruby Creek Disabled Veterans Hunt Club in the Grand River Room at 1:30 p.m. From approximately 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., dozens of volunteers from Team Depot, The Home Depot’s associate volunteer force, will be beautifying the property and giving some TLC to the areas surrounding the Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Volunteers will also help landscape and revitalize the campus including the area surrounding the flag poles.
